The Freshwater Pearl (CaCO3 Calcium Carbonate) became Kentucky's "Official Gemstone" in
(1986).  The pearl is taken from mussels that are found in the freshwater streams and rivers of the
state.  River pearls are among the most beautiful and durable in the world.  These river pearls are
collected and crafted into rings, cuff links, stick pins and other jewelry.  The freshwater pearl became
a state symbol of Kentucky as a result of some Western Kentucky school children.  They petitioned
their state representative to make the proposal.
