Goldenrod (Solidago gigantea) became Kentucky's "Official Flower" in (1926).  Goldenrod
grows all over Kentucky, and is depicted on the state flag and seal.  Clusters of their golden plumes
make for a spectacular show in early autumn.   Many Kentuckians blame the plant for their allergies,
when the culprit is actually ragweed, which blooms at the same time.  Approximately thirty of nearly
a hundred varieties of this herb are native to all of Kentucky.  The herb is reported to help many
ailments including back pain, kidney stones, and arthritis.
