Tennessee's State Gem - Freshwater Pearl
State Prints© Celebrating the official symbols of your state....

The Freshwater Pearl (CaCO3 Calcium Carbonate) became Tennessee's "State Gem" in (1979). The pearl is taken from mussels that are found in the freshwater streams and rivers of the state. River pearls are among the most beautiful and durable in the world. These river pearls are collected and crafted into rings, cuff links, stick pins and other jewelry. Tennessee river pearls are of all colors and they are “natural” as the mussel made them, all pearl, all the way through. They have been found in various shapes, such as spherical, pear-shaped, and baroque or irregular. The historic Tennessee River Freshwater Pearl Farm and Museum located in Camden, Benton County, is the "Official Site of Freshwater Pearl Culturing."
