Tennessee's Sport Fish - Largemouth Bass
State Prints© Celebrating the official symbols of your state....

The Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides) became the "Official Sport Fish" of Tennessee in (1988). This bass is probably the most popular and sought after fish in the state. Sometimes referred to as “bigmouth,” its popularity is due to a strong fighting ability, relatively large size and pleasing flavor. The Tennessee largemouth can grow to 14 or 15 inches by its third year and may be found in most of the lakes and streams in the state. The largemouth bass prefers quiet, clear waters with abundant vegetation. Areas with abundant vegetation provide the largemouth with protection from predators. The clear waters the largemouth calls home, allows the bass to utilize vision to detect prey. They also prefer shallow water that is no deeper than 2.5 meters, but they will sometimes occupy deeper regions.
