The Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum) became the "Official Reptile" of Texas in (1993).  If
Texans couldn't adopt a Texas-sized reptile, they could simply adopt a reptile with a Texas sized
reputation.  The horned lizard, aka the horny toad, grows to a maximum length of 4-6 inches.  Its
coloration generally serves as camouflage against predation.  When threatened by a predator, the
horned lizard puffs up its body.  This causes its spiny scales to protrude, making it difficult meal to
swallow.

Horned lizards played an important role in many native American cultures.  The horned lizard was
often seen as a symbol of strength and healing.
